How to Get Voice Over Work in India: Look for Clients, Not for Jobs

Every week, a message or two like this arrives on WhatsApp:

Hello sir, I have voice samples for commercials and dubbing projects. I am new to this field and searching opportunities to prove myself. Could you please let me know where I can send my samples for your review?

Trying is good. But you deserve the same answer everybody else gets, and it sounds blunt before it becomes useful.

I Cannot Give You Voice Over Work

I am a voice over artist. Not a studio, not an agency, not a casting director. Nobody hands me work either. Every job I have done, I got by finding the client myself.

So your demo has reached a voice artist who is chasing exactly the clients you want. I have no work to give. Neither does any other voice artist on your contact list.

Voice Over Is a Business, Not a Job

Almost no studio or company in India takes you on as a voice over artist, pays a monthly salary, and sends work every month. A small number of in-house positions exist at large studios and broadcasters. I do not know that world and cannot help you into it. Freelance is what I know, and freelance is where nearly all voice over work sits.

From the day you choose voice over as a career, you are running a business. Your product is your voice and the finished recording is what you deliver. You need to find the customers. You set the fee, you send the invoice, and you chase the payment. Nobody performs those tasks for you.

A job seeker waits to be chosen. A business owner goes and finds the people who need the product. This is a major difference in thinking.

Look for clients, not for jobs.

What the Job Listings Show for Voice Over and Dubbing

Search a big Indian job portal for dubbing artist jobs and the portal reports over thirty thousand vacancies. Open them. Every listing on the first page is a call centre, because the portal matches the word “voice” and returns BPO work. Search instead for voice over artist and the results are mostly VFX and design roles, because the portal now matches the word “artist”. What does this mean? It means two things: a) those listings are misleading, and b) nobody hires voice artists as salaried staff. The next paragraph shows why.

The companies that genuinely dub films and series advertise honestly. One of India’s largest media localisation companies listed thirteen full-time openings across five cities: recording engineers, mixing engineers, post-production interns, a writer, a dubbing director. No voice artists. The largest dubbing company in the world listed fifty-five openings, and no voice artists there either.

In short, dubbing companies employ the people around the microphone. The voice in front of the microphone is booked per project.

Who Buys Voice Over Services

Not one buyer on this list is a voice over artist.

Finding these buyers and talking to them is your actual work, every week, for as long as you do voice over.

Unions for Voice Over Artists and Dubbing Artists

Tamil film and television dubbing has one extra gate. A union controls casting for films and serials, and union membership is permission to compete for freelance film work, not employment. Membership costs a substantial one-time fee and guarantees no work, no calls, and no income. Join once your career already justifies the cost. Ask the union directly for current terms.

Five Steps to Get You Started in the Voice Over Business

1. Decide what you sell. “I can do any voice” sells nothing. Choose a language and a lane: Tamil dubbing, Hindi corporate narration, English e-learning. Choose the lane your voice genuinely suits, not the lane that sounds most glamorous. A client remembers one specific thing about a voice artist, so offer one specific thing. Listen to ten finished pieces in your chosen lane and write down what the successful reads have in common.

2. Build the treated voice over room. Treated space, decent microphone and interface, low noise floor, editing skill. Record the same paragraph every day for a month and listen back for the differences in room tone, mouth noise, level, and pace. Consistency is the product. A producer who cannot predict your audio quality will not book you a second time.

3. Record a real demo. Sixty to ninety seconds of the work you want, performed the way a finished job sounds. Not a self-introduction. Not “Hello sir, my name is.” If Tamil dubbing is the goal, the demo is dubbing. Put the strongest piece first, because most listeners stop after fifteen seconds. Re-record the demo every six months as your craft improves.

4. Build one place to send people. A WhatsApp Business profile carrying a demo link is a start. A page carrying your own name is better. When a producer asks what you do, the answer is a link sent inside ten seconds, never a promise to send something later. Keep the demo, a one-line description of your lane, and a way to reach you on that page.

5. Approach the buyers every week. Build a list of studios, agencies, and producers in your city. Write a short message: who you are, the lane you work in, one demo link. No life story. Send the message, note the date, and follow up once after three weeks. Most recipients never reply. A few do. Approaching buyers is sales, and sales is the actual job.

Know your fee before a client asks, and know what the fee covers. Not only the recording, but where the recording will be used, for how long, and in which territory. If the right number is a mystery, start with what voice over costs in India.

Those five steps cover the business. The craft is a separate and longer list, which I have written up as the 23 skills a working voice over artist needs, from breath control and script analysis to the business acumen behind everything on this page.

Your Room, Not Your Microphone

Step 2 deserves more than a line. A client buys a finished file, often delivered the same day, ready to drop onto an editor’s timeline.

Delivering that file needs a quiet treated space with a low noise floor (ambient sound level) and no echo, a decent microphone and audio interface hardware, and enough editing skill to clean and export a mastered file without help. Consistency matters just as much: a pickup line next week must match the take sent today.

Phone recordings get deleted unheard. So do files recorded beside a ceiling fan, or with traffic or dogs barking outside the window. There is no place for low-quality work. No client teaches the craft, and no client pays for the learning. Build the quiet room without echo before selling the voice.

What AI Took Away From Voice Over Artists

Five years ago a beginner in India started on small jobs. IVR prompts. A basic e-learning module. YouTube narration. A corporate explainer. The money was poor, the work was steady, and the demo reel could grow.

Most of that tier is synthetic voices now, generated by AI. Generating the audio costs a client far less than booking a person, and for flat informational reading, the machine is good enough.

What remains for a human voice is performance. Character. Emotion. Dubbing to picture. Brand campaigns needing one specific person. What is left pays better than the tier that disappeared, but it is harder and needs experience and range. There is no tier for inexperience.

One caution. Much of the paid beginner work still going is recording voice data for AI companies. The fee arrives once, as a UPI payment, at a beginner’s rate, in exchange for improving the machine that took the beginner work. Take those sessions with open eyes. They are short-term gratification for a dead future. They take away your voice, as well as all possible future work.

One Last Thing

Building a voice over business takes months, not days. Keep your current income while the business grows. Almost everyone who succeeded in voice over did so alongside something else at the start.

For the long version, read my full guide on how to launch your voice over career in India. If dubbing is the goal, read the difference between voice over and dubbing first, because voice over and dubbing are not the same skill.

Take one line from this page: Look for clients, not for jobs.

IVR.

IVR।

Frequently asked questions

Can you give me voice over work?
No, and not because I am unwilling. I am a freelance voice over artist, not a studio, an agency, or a casting director. I have no work to hand out, because nobody hands work to me either. Every job I have done, I found by approaching the client myself. When you send your demo to a voice artist, you are sending it to somebody in the same position as you, only further along. Send it to the people who actually buy voice over instead: ad agencies, production houses, corporate video producers, e-learning companies, and dubbing studios.
Do you take assistants, trainees, or students?
No. I work alone from a home studio in Chennai, and I do not run a course, an academy, or an internship. I am not being modest about this. There is simply no role to fill. If you want to learn, the fastest route is to get your own recording setup working, record every day, and study the work of people doing the kind of voice over you want to do.
How do I get into Tamil dubbing?
Through the dubbing studios, not through voice artists. Dubbing in Tamil is cast almost entirely by the studios that hold the contracts for films, series, and OTT content, and most of them are in Chennai. Find them, visit or write to them, and ask specifically about dubbing auditions rather than about a job. Be ready for the actual skill the work needs, which is matching another actor's timing, breath, and emotion in sync to picture, not simply reading lines well. For film and television work there is also a union that gatekeeps casting, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it: membership is permission to compete for freelance work, not a job, it costs a substantial one-time fee, and it guarantees nothing at all. It is something to grow into once your career already justifies the cost, not a first step.
Has AI taken all the voice over work in India?
Not all of it, but it has taken a large share of the entry-level tier that beginners used to start on. IVR prompts, basic e-learning modules, simple corporate explainers, and a lot of YouTube narration are now generated rather than recorded. What remains for human voices is performance work: character, emotion, dubbing to picture, and brand campaigns where the client needs a specific person. That work pays better and is not going away soon, but it is the harder end of the craft, and beginners now have to start there without the easy tier to practise on.
