A brief lands with a single word on the tone line: conversational. I record the audition, send it across, and the reply comes back the next morning. "Love the voice. It's just not quite conversational."

Here is a situation I have seen more than once. A client books a 30-second read for what the email calls a "digital campaign." The recording is delivered on Tuesday, everyone is happy, the invoice is paid. Six months later the same ad turns up on television during a cricket match.

Nobody in that story was being dishonest. The brief simply never said where the ad would run or for how long, and so the quote was written for one thing while the campaign quietly became another. That is not a billing dispute. It is a scoping failure, and it is entirely preventable. Here's how:

There's a flag on the gate downstairs. Someone in the next building has had the TV on since seven. There's a flag hoisting in the open ground nearby; it's the 80th Independence Day, and Chennai is doing what Chennai does on 15 August, which is mostly sound.

I want to be upfront about what's about to happen in this article: the leap from national independence to freelance independence is a stretch, and I'm not going to pretend it isn't. A person quoting for a 60-second ad is not doing anything remotely comparable to what happened in 1947. That's not the parallel. The parallel is smaller and, I think, more useful.

Almost every enquiry I get opens with some version of the same question: "How much for a voice over?" Fair question. Annoying answer: it depends. But "it depends" is a cop-out, so let me actually explain what it depends on, give you real numbers, and hand you the same rate guide the rest of the world uses.

This one's for the people doing the hiring: brand managers, agency producers, e-learning teams, video houses, and founders. If you're an artist trying to price yourself, stick around too; the second half is for you. Also to note: This isn’t my rate card. Contact me directly for that ;).

Voice over work has changed dramatically over the past decade. What once required expensive studio bookings and location-specific talent has evolved into a borderless marketplace where quality, reliability, and cultural understanding matter more than geography. Indian English voice over artists are emerging as players, bringing a combination of linguistic versatility, technical excellence, and professional standards that could rival major markets worldwide.

Gone are the days when "Indian English" meant only the heavily accented stereotype perpetuated by outdated media portrayals.
I've always been fascinated by the power of voice, more so after 2019. There's something magical about recording these invisible waves. If you're like me and dream of using your vocal talents, you might be wondering how to become a voice over artist in India.

Starting a voice over career isn't the same as becoming a dubbing artist. While dubbing involves replacing dialogue in existing content, voice over work covers a broader range of projects like commercials, audiobooks, and e-learning courses. It's a competitive field, but with the right skills and determination, it's possible to carve out a successful niche for yourself in India's entertainment and media industry.

If you use social media today, you probably come across multiple videos with the same voice over artist explaining what's unfolding on the screen. The voice might be sophisticated, but the script is forced, poorly thought out, and the grammar might be wrong, making the script's emphasis strange and incorrect. What's really happening here? The Voice Over was generated by an AI voice generator. While it might sound easy, cheap and fast, the end result is a video that has no identity of its own, and one that easily gets lost among the thousands of videos that are uploaded to social media every single day. If you are building a brand that is intended to last, that's the opposite of what you want.

The truth is that many of these videos are actually just money grabs, and the videos themselves are just throwaway Media that was never intended to last.

In the world of voice acting, your voice is your most valuable asset. But to truly capture the depth, range, and nuance of your voice, having the right microphone is paramount. As the bridge between performance and recording, the microphone acts as the lens through which your audience experiences your voice, so choosing the right microphone to record your performance is important.

Technology advances daily, and there are many different types of microphones available, each designed for specific purposes. For voice actors, both experienced and new, it's important to know about all these choices, and how they affect a voice recording. The microphone you pick will affect how your work sounds. It can change how warm and full, or how clear your voice sounds, and can make your performance seem better or worse to an audience.

A clear guide to how the two crafts differ, what each one involves, and which your project actually needs.

There's a distinct difference between Voice Over and Dubbing, even though there is an overlap in terms of skills needed. While scrolling through Instagram and Twitter, I see that the term Voice Over is used differently in Tamil Nadu than in other parts of the world. I put this down to our own unique way of using the English Language, and our fondness for giving it a local flavour. How are we using this term differently? More and more, people are using the term "Voice Over" instead of using the term "Voice Dubbing" or "Dubbing", and vice versa (strangely enough). To me, that's odd, but if the person using these terms interchangeably knows what the other means, then maybe it's just a slip-up. You see, I am a voice over artist who often gets asked if he does 'dubbing' and I'm not always sure whether they actually mean 'dubbing' until I ask a bit more.

A successful voice-over (VO) project relies on effective communication between the client and the voice-over artist. One of the most critical aspects of this communication is the project brief. A clear, comprehensive brief can significantly impact the outcome of the project, ensuring that the final product meets the client's expectations and effectively conveys their message.

In this article, we'll discuss the importance of a clear brief in voice-over projects, and how it contributes to overall project success. We also have a rather detailed sample brief that you can download for free, at the end of the article.

Every business needs to upgrade its capital assets at strategic times. In the voice-over services field, the assets that we use are our studio, our microphones, audio interfaces, computer, and software tools that are involved in recording and creating a finished voice-over that is ready for the client's use. Unlike many other fields of work where capital assets are consumed when creating the finished product, capital assets for voice-over last for many years, so frequent upgrades aren't really necessary.

I'm a Voice Over artist from India and I have a mild, neutral, Indian accent. So, what does that mean? What does an Indian accent sound like?

Well, the truth is that there isn't any one single accent that is definitively 'Indian'. Although, there seems to be a stereotypical 'Indian accent' (does "birdie num num" come to mind?).
